I'm here as the mechanic (father) of a 2010 speed3 owner (daughter). I've been on here as a guest in the past, and for the most part, it's been very helpful.
Now I'm searching diligently for answers to the excessive smoking when started, and for way to long after its been started. There is also a problem with stalling when stopping. But, as suggested, I'm weeding through the many posts before i throw my hands up. I've found 3 different "fixes" so far, and they all seem very convinced that theirs is the real solution.
Intake valve seals, oil restriction bolt, drain tube. It's exhausting and a bit frustrating at times. Think I'll just redo it all

Smoking from the tailpipe can only be one of two things (aside from engine problems). It's either oil burning from leaking seals in the turbo (turbo is worn out) or a bad head gasket (coolant vapor). Head gasket failures are EXTREMELY uncommon on our platform unless you're heavily modified. So, my money would be on the turbo. Restrictor bolts may subdue the smoke, but that's not fixing the problem. In fact, it's making it worse because all that does is reduce the lubrication of the journal bearing in the turbo further. The correct fix is to take off the turbo inlet pipe and inspect the turbo for shaft play and oil in the compressor housing. If it knocks side to side and has all sorts of oil in the housing, it's time to replace the turbo before it grenades and makes it time to replace the entire engine.
