I'm looking at mx-5's more and more everyday....

I just cant get over how badass it must be to have the same whp as my car, but weigh 1,000lbs less.

I really like the style of a white hard top NC, coupled with a FM SC kit....

but this NA is BAMF, everyone says the NA is the way to go and I enjoy turbo's more than SC's....

If you want to post more videos I'm sure no one would complain

I'll have more videos and pictures to come once spring is here. Quite a few track days planned, and I'm sure I'll do the occasional auto-x in between.

And I have some good comparison data for when I'm back at Blackhawk with my new tire setup. GPS data from last fall, best lap I managed was a 1:28.8. Novice group was a mistake, so much traffic.

Tire plans changed, one more year on street tires (probably a good thing since I'm a noob). Found some brand new 225 rivals on 6uls for a solid deal. Sadly they're 15x8s so they'll be getting street duty and the rivals will go on my 15x9 jongbloeds.

Comparison pic next to a normal tire to show the toy car status of a miata lol.

I need some opinions. If you could pick up a 110k 1.8l and 5 speed for $600, would you? It would be for nothing more than a backup in case of catastrophic failure.

Motor: ARP head studs, an OEM Mazda MLS headgasket, and had the head redone. The cylinder head was resurfaced, degreased, pressure checked, had a valve job, and had one valve replaced. Engine has approximately 110k on it. I also replaced the timing belt, water pump, and all top end gaskets, all done 7k miles ago

Trans has a freshly rebuilt shifter, stock clutch.

Thoughts? Good price?

If the guy has all the documentation and you can verify the engine is running and has good compression, it is a decent deal.

Just the motor? Or the full car? Full car YES. Just motor and transmission... Worth it but not necessarily a killer price to just sit in the garage. AKA I'd say yes if I was doing a swap right now, I'd say no if it was just a backup.

I will second Spencer the Love Dispensers' response. It's not a great price, about what I would pay if I needed a 1.8 + trans right away.

Yeah that's just motor and Trans. No car. I'll see if I can talk the guy down to $500 or so. Otherwise I'll hold off. My motor should be healthy, only about 30k on it. Knock on wood

Ya hold off. Or get a lower price. It really is up to you and the amount of extra mental safety knowing you have it sitting there. For me, that isn't as important. These engines are bullet proof though with a turbo it changes it a bit.

Can't wait to try these tires out. For now I'm stuck with the 205's until I can get the damn fenders rolled.

Oh and a big +1 to Flying Miata's kit. I didn't touch the car all winter, just kept a tender on the battery in my basement. Went out, threw a cap full of oil in each cylinder to help with the dry start, and she fired right up. Drove it home without issue. Can't beat that.

Half way through rolling the fenders for the 225 Rival / 9 combo. They will be going on their maiden voyage tomorrow (just street duty, but still excited).

These 205 neogen's are surprisingly grippy in a straight line with regard to wheel spin, not so much in the turns lol.

Neogens are a really communicative tire. You know exactly what they are doing at all times. Great budget tire, but only 300 treadwear iirc, so slip should be expected.

With a passenger in the car on rough country roads, didn't rub once. Surprisingly easy to fit 225s on 9s. Loved the way it drove, can't wait to get them on the track.

I run hydra, same process for MS3 though. All you need are the coils and some wire, here's how I set them up. Wasted spark just like factory, only adjustment are the dwell times. And your factory plug wires have to be crimped down to fit the LS studs.

Autobahn was a success, no good pics of the car yet. Only one close call, which @Gr8Speed; was riding along for lol. It was fun watching the corner guys force mustangs to give a miata the point by

Fancy Wilwood rotors are toast. As of right now the plan is to upgrade to an 11.75" kit (current is 11" rotor) and run good old fashioned (2 piece) blanks with the same dynalite calipers. Replacement cost will then be $50 a side vs $180 a side.

On further inspection, rotors are still good but turns out it had wilwood E pads, not rated for anything over 1000 degrees or so, explains the heat issues. So I'm upgrading to 11.75 anyway and will be running dtc60s. 11" kit is already sold. Ducting seal at the front of the car will be improved as well.
