Default Corksport turbo review

Alright guys I was beta tester number 01, im going to start off by saying I was lucky to become a beta tester because I originally was not going to be one, but apparently one of the other testers had something come up and returned the turbo, thus I was called upon to fulfill his spot, so I was last to receive the turbo but still ended up with turbo number 01.

I would like to note I found it very nice that the turbo comes along with everything needed to do the install. A new DP gasket, exhaust mani gasket, new studs, nuts, a coolant line, and a new heat shield, all boxed up nicely and protected as to not be damaged during shipping.

Lets get into this now, I have never done a turbo swap, but I have done just about all other the basic things other than building a block so I knew what I was getting myself into and started on a Friday in case I ran into problems and needed the weekend to finish. The install went pretty smooth by the end of Friday afternoon the old turbo was out and the new turbo was in but had to call it a night and come back the next day to put on the intake, battery, 3 port ebcs then fire her up.

I ran into some tuning problems (tuned by Nishan), non turbo related, I had my 3 port ebcs fail on me and had to get a new one so that set back along with being last of the beta testers to receive the turbo has made it so I am not actually finished with the tuning yet, I am mid way through my 91 tune (I live in California and we have shitty gas) so currently Im making about 315hp @ 20psi. I will be doing an E85 tune so I will post up the results from that as soon as it is finished.

I drive a lot so I have put over 1000 miles on the turbo already in the short time it has been installed it has put up with the abuse I put it through very well, I also Autocross my car and have an event this weekend i will be running the car in so I will post results of how it performs on the track as well so stand by for that.

Overall I could not be more pleased with this turbo and its performance. It surpasses my needs and what I ever wanted power wise for my car. The turbo is made vey well, and looks very nice, it is a really responsive turbo and flows better than the BNR, its a shame to have it tucked away in the back hiding from us all.

Oh brother, first some clown named "Raider" now this....

I really wish they would have reached out to me, we could have done some work. Graph and chart porn for days vs. k04 and bnrs3. I have hundreds of runs for baselines of many combinations of mods/intakes/intercoolers/exhausts/etc across many temperatures and gas/wmi ready for easy 1:1 comparison on my car as well as the capability to self tune.

I know others do as well, so I am not suggesting I am the only one, but I hope one of these fell into the hands of a data/tuning guy.

Thanks for posting. I looked at the listing for this turbo yesterday when it went up and there's a lot to like about it, from the fact that it includes all new hardware including the turbo studs, the billet compressor wheel, and many other things about it that seem very well thought out. I'm eagerly awaiting some real pump gas results from these turbos. Their website says it's capable of flowing 50 lbs/min at sea level, which is about 380 g/s. I want to see a log that supports this claim from someone. If that's true, even if you can get close, that's an incredible amount of airflow for a turbo of this size.

Thus far, the turbo has impressed me.

No issues tuning it as far as boost control goes and I have seen power come fairly easily.

Hoping to work with someone with auxiliary fueling to really test the limits.

Also, for the record, my statement that it flowed a bit more than S3 is only my findings at the current boost levels. I have not exceeded 22 PSI yet with anyone.

ko4 tune on the blue graph, unfinnshed cs turbo 91 tune on the red graph.

I don't know why but my v dyno numbers have always been low but ive continued to log in the same spot so I can keep my baseline and this does show the hp gain so far. I could care less what vdyno says my actual hp is because I know its wrong. im posting these graphs simply to show the gain in power along with the data logs posted above.

Hi I have a question.

I just ordered a corksport turbo and was wondering if you need to have an aftermarket boost controller (such as the cobb 3 port) to run it at say 300-380hp? I was under the impression it was just a simple bolt on and tune. I get my tunes via dyno (mazedit) and loaded onto my accessport. Is the boost control 100% essential for these levels?

The stock EBCS is fine assuming you run the provided restrictor. You have to know how to tune though. You can't bolt it up and just run it. At the very least you will need to zero out WGDC, get the spring pressure curve baseline, rebuild boost curve with WGDC/dynamics, setup boost tables, do a MAF cal, etc. If you don't have upgraded fuel internals, you better get some on order.

I am taking it to my tuner who has a dyno and specialise in Mazdaspeed (MPS here in au). I have cobb stage 3 components already in and custom tuned. Asked my tuner since and it is good to go. Thanks

Is corksport actually manufacturing this turbo, or is it just a glorified re-badged "something or other?"

CorkSport is too small of an operation to manufacture their own turbos. It is built to their specs by someone else, though it has not been confirmed by whom. @dale_gribble has done his research (hats off btw), and speculated it to be Tomioka.

This is already widely-known. Tomioka makes a lot of turbos using Mitsubishi parts.

I wish one of the beta testers would have be willing to push this to the limit and provide data... (i know beating a dead horse)

Not that I'm going to buy one with a 3071 now and a 5858 being stuffed in soon. But I'm always being asked "what turbo"
