Default BT decision time

Read all your BT Sticky and still debating between GTX2867 and GTX3071/76 setup for my car. At this time I don't plan to built the engine, my car is my DD. Incline to get the 2867 and to get a E85 Tune as I have with my K04 but not sure how much more will I get from my current setup. Any suggestions? Also if I get your "kit" what else do I need to get to install based on my current mods? Thanks.

Me personally, I would go 3071. It has room to grow if you ever decide to build and it will run more efficient @ stock blocks limits than a 2867. The 2867 can shine a bit quicker, but without a built block, you won't push it that hard down low anyway.

What they said. You really can't go wrong with either one. You would need a bigger intake to fit the turbo and a 3 bar map if you plan on running more than 21psi.

Do you ever plan on making more than 440-450WHP? If no, then get the 2867. If yes, get the 3071. You're going to lose some low end with the 3071, which will probably make overall drivability suffer slightly.

Basically you're just choosing your effective RPM range. It'll start and end and little later with the 3071, so I'd base your choice on how you like your car to respond.

I notice you have the CP-E catted DP, so you might also get away with running the 3071 IWG without creep issues. I'm not sure anyone can confirm that as it seems to be a case by case basis.

I'm going to agree with everyone else here. The 2867 will have more power band, but the 3071 will likely be safer on a stock block because torque down low is what proves costly for the factory internals.

I recommend either a JBR or an HTP 3" intake to go with a bigger turbo. You can go bigger to 3.5" if you want, but I recommend a 3" intake for any big turbo setup. It seems as if you have everything else you will need.

PS: a 3bar map sensor and the plug and play harness would also be something you will want to get so you can control boost over 22psi.

On top of what the edge guys said you will need a form of boost control Either a 3 port or the boost dial we make will do the trick.

I think of the GT2867 as a 330-375whp turbo and the 3071 as a 375-450whp turbo in most setups.

Remember that the tradeoff for a higher hp number is spool and response. So if you do lots of city and lower speed driving a smaller turbo is better suited. If you have a lot of open road go for the larger snail.

Thanks for the input Lex. I have a Cobb 3 port EBCS on my K04 right now. Most of my driving is Highway so pulling in for a GTX3071r IWG setup with a 3" HTP intake, also getting me a 3 Map Sensor while I am at it. Going to order the 14psi spring setting and shoot for 21-22 PSI with 25% E85 tune. Would you be concerned with boost creep with this setup?

With a catted downpipe like in your sig you should be fine for boost creep.

My experiance (at elevation) is that i LOVE the 2867, but my prefferance was to not ever have to brake boost, fast spool, and exelent drivability. With this turbo, i have no issues jumping out into traffic if need be.

I have to agree with @Mortose; with spool and brake boosting. I wanted something similar to the k04 spool time for perfect everyday dd.
It pulls hard all the way to redline if needed.
Also I’m not at elevation.

Well pulled the trigger today

ATP GTX2867r
HTP 3" Intake
Bosch 3 bar Map
Map Sensor harness
2" silicone coupler
T clamps

and a lot of patience to wait for the brown truck to deliver and then install...LOL

What boost are you running on your 2867 and what HP and torque are you getting?

Well, I'm running around 25-26 psi right now, and waiting for a new revision from lex. My HP/tq numbers are going to be skewed a little as I'm at 6400 asl, but from my research, I would say 400/410 isn't a grossly over corrected power level.
@atvfreek; is at sea level iirc, so his numbers would be more accurate.

Do some searching and reading but ill be nice....

regardless of the turbo. The number you have to worry about on the stock block is torque. The limits of the stock block have been tested to be safe to about the 400 lb-ft. Keep it below that and don't boost below 3k and you should be good to go on the stock block with either turbo.
Having said that the gtx3071 is much better suited for stock block safety because of where it puts the power band.

I have done some reading im just trying to get a ballpark of safe numbers for the gtx28 but everyone is saying the gtx 3071 is better suited for stock block because of the torque. Torque is aka the killer of our motors. So im probably just gonna go with the gtx3071 when it comes time.

I think you've only taken in half the story so to speak. If you're more of a daily around town kinda guy and want a little extra pep, the 2867 may be more suitable for u as well. Just have your torque tuned down when u get tuned. If you have longer stretches of road and prefer your power up top, the 3071 may be more suitable.

Both would work just clearly would be tuned different. Hopefully that helps although that may have already been stated previously but I'm not scrolling back up to check lol

Yea it does help me. Thanks for the advice. I probably going to go with the gtx3071 but also a couple friends who own speed 3s as well as freek said I should go for the 3076. But I think that will be over kill.

For those concerned with the spool and response of a GTX3071 I need to say it's not bad at all. It can make boost down low just that it will come a bit slower, that's all. If you're at like 2200rpm and push the accel pedal in about 50% it takes about a second or so before it wakes up in 3rd or 4th, but once it does it just goes. This is still a 2.3 litre engine, so even before the turbo wakes up you will still have some ponies to push you forward and bring the RPM up.

Slower spool on these turbos is not horribly slow, just a bit slower. As for the boost... they can make boost even at low RPM (below 3k), just that not as fast as a smaller turbo, and sometimes this may be a good thing. And once you're at like 4k rpm the inertia is totally gone.

Once the streets will be clean again, probably in March or April, I'll work again with @Lex on a revision of my current tune to make it wake up sooner and faster.

Right now with the slower spool (which I guess no matter what we do with the tune will still be there, it's just the inertia of the bearings and wheels) when on summer tires I can also go WOT in 2nd gear from about 3000rpm with minimal wheel spin which occurs pretty late, so slower spool/boost build-up is not always a bad thing. With the factory K04 I was never able to go WOT in 2nd with or without the factory 1st/2nd gears load limits without massively spinning the wheels in the 3-4k rpm range.

So when times comes choose wise my friends... but right now I'd still take the gtx3071 even if there was a time when I was thinking that the 2876 may be better (which may still be the case, but now I just have a long and happy marriage with the 3071 and I can't see any reason to divorce).

Totally agree different strokes for different folks but I run 3/9 E85 and read a few places that they couldn't without going 5th or 6th port.

Build is done, I will post pictures later. Only issue we ran into was not related to the turbo but stripping out a couple of the bolts that hold the heat shields, other than that pretty straight forward. Zero oil, anti-freeze or boost leaks...nice.

Right now just running a break-in map with 0 WGDC and 15 psi max boost to make sure everything is in order before Eric at FlowTuned starts dialing in the fun. Even at this level the difference is significant from the K04, extremely happy with this baby. Spool sound is pure sex on this turbo with a 3" HTP intake..
