The Official Gen 1/2 Mazdaspeed 3 Intercooler Thread 8 Attachment(s) ****2015 update thanks to @Inquisitive;***** Intercooler: TMIC / FMIC for MS6, MS3 (1st and 2nd Gen) Purpose of TMIC / FMIC Our air-to-air intercooler (IC) increases the efficiency of the induction system by reducing induction air heat created by our turbocharger resulting in a more dense intake charge, which promotes more thorough combustion. As you start modifying, you will notice more KR with higher ambient temperatures. This is reduced somewhat by replacing the stock TMIC with a larger TMIC or FMIC. WMI is another way to cool the cylinder temperatures, but that is for another thread. Three minutes of standing still can raise the IAT by 30 degrees. Increasing IAT by one degree raises BAT by one degree. For every 10 degrees of increase in IAT, you lose 1% of your wheel horsepower. A 75 degree rise from being stuck in traffic is 7.5%. For a 300 WHP, 7.5% is 22.5 HP. Once your vehicle is moving again, it usually takes from 15 to 30 seconds for the IAT to start dropping towards ambient. @MSMS3; ) FMIC are particularly required in hot ambient temperature areas to prevent heat soaking. Note that FMICs lower the boost pressure @rfinkle2; ) and cause some turbo lag (OTC). FMIC provide the coolest source of air for consistent power delivery, typically a 30º F drop, which helps prevents KR to support more HP. However, TMIC are more popular and do not add turbo lag. See MSF Wiki Glossary for any terms not understood: Glossary - Mazdaspeed Forums Mazdaspeed 3/6 Wikispeedia Prices are 2015 ball park figures. You may be able to find better deals from various websites. It's up to you to find the best price. With threads like this it is often asked, “Which is the best?” This is difficult to answer as some consider best quality at any price, personal preference / bragging rights / street cred (popular brand), best value (quality at a good price), popularity (local Nator), cheapest price, etc. Like the Wiki and my other threads, this is just a list in descending Genpu purchased popularity order. • CP-E TMIC • CorkSport TMIC • Extreme Turbo Systems (ETS) Top Mounted Intercooler (TMIC) • CX Racing (own core now) FMIC • Treadstone core (TR6 or TR8) plus piping (previously with CX Racing piping) FMIC • CP-E FMIC • Cobb FMIC • CorkSport FMIC • Ultimate Racing FMIC • Street Unit TMIC WARNING: read http://www.mazdaspeedforum.org/forum/foru...3/#post1927730 • Forge FMIC • Full Race FMIC • Sure Charge Tubes WARNING: read http://www.mazdaspeedforum.org/forum/foru...3/#post1927730 • HDI FMIC GT2 • FJ Motorsports (previously Protégé Garage (PG)) piping / Godspeed is no longer available, replaced with Treadstone TR1035 FMIC • OTC FMIC • TurboXS FMIC • ATP FMIC • AutoExe Sports Intercooler (TMIC) • JBR DISI Intercooler Boost Tubes • JBR Piping Kit CP-E TMIC http://www.mazdaspeedforum.org/forum/foru...1&d=1422801781 Available from: CPE Top Mount Intercooler MS3 MS6 MS6 (Yes), MS3 1st Gen (Yes), MS3 2nd Gen (Yes) $399 CorkSport TMIC http://www.mazdaspeedforum.org/forum/foru...1&d=1422801834 Available from: Mazdaspeed 3 TMIC CORKSPORT Top Mount Intercooler 6 MS6 CX7 MS6 (Yes), MS3 1st Gen (Yes), MS3 2nd Gen (Yes) $399.99 Extreme Turbo Systems (ETS) Top Mounted Intercooler (TMIC) http://www.mazdaspeedforum.org/forum/foru...1&d=1422864399 Available from: MazdaSpeed 3 Intercoolers & MazdaSpeed 6 Intercoolers MS6 (Yes), MS3 1st Gen (Yes), MS3 2nd Gen (Yes) $595 + optional $100 anodising (black, gold, red or blue) CX Racing (own core now) FMIC http://www.mazdaspeedforum.org/forum/foru...1&d=1422864942 Available from: cxracing.com: Intercooler MS6 (Not found), MS3 1st Gen (Yes), MS3 2nd Gen (Yes) $248 Treadstone core (TR6 or TR8) plus piping (previously with CX Racing piping) FMIC http://www.mazdaspeedforum.org/forum/foru...1&d=1422268894 Available from: Treadstone Performance Mazda Speed 3 Intercooler Kit | Treadstone Performance INC. Good stuff. Now go into the custom kits or at least piping. :wink1: |
fuck, can we cosolidate all the posts? i dont know which one to thank LOL |
They look fine to me. |
I don't know about genones but that ebay piping kit wouldn't work at all for the Pus imo. There isn't any proper bends in any of those pipes to get to the TB and the same goes for the hot pipe. That is unless people want to hack and tack every 3 inches. Great write-up... You could add the PG piping kit and the Godspeed Type C core, not the best solution but for a DIY IC setup it can be done on the Gen2s without any modding of crashbar/piping. |
Nice writeup. You should add the synapse engineering FMIC. Mazdaspeed3 FMIC Kit for 07 - 09 Mazdaspeed 3: Synapse Engineering Outlet |
now do you have to tune the car with the fmic on cuz i just put a cs tip on and a cpe cai and the cx racing fmic on now and next week im doing the 3in dp and a mazdaspeed catback and the cpe gauge pod holder with prosport evo gauges |

All of this being said, which TMIC's are preferred by members? I am considering the ETS, Corksport, and cp-e, however I don't like that the hood scoop on the Gen 2 rubs on the corksport or that the cp-e is not customizable in color. That being said, since they are all comparable in core size. |
I found an used CXracing IC for $375. It does say "practicly brend new". I wonder if i should just go for it :/ |
