ALERT! wrong ms3 brake pads sold at Autozone,Advance, Oriely

Well went out do my front pads got semi metallic autozone. Took everything off and notice 1. the pads where smaller than the ones i pulled out. 2. there is a hard where paice that connects to the outside pad to hold in place this was missing. :dunno:So i go back to autozone turns out they have the same pads listed for the mazda 3 and the mazdaspeed3.. WRONG!! same with advance auto parts and oriely. At oreily i saw a pic of the Speed6 brake pads and they looked just like mine the dealer wants $93.00 I can get speed6 pads for $60 does anyone know if the pads on thse speed6 are the same, they look the same, i was thinking of getting these.

Haltech 04-27-2008 01:18 PM

I thought these brakes were off the volvo.. Try referencing the volvo pads if you go back.

gsrtype1 04-27-2008 01:22 PM

yeah at napa they had a pic of some volvo pads that looked like ours(he was treyen to match it up as they don't even have mazdaspeed in there system) but i didnt want to order them risk it.. So if i ask for volvo pads wich car do you know? that new coupe maybe?

Haltech 04-27-2008 01:24 PM

Im not sure if it was the C30 or C40.

It may be, who knows. Someone is going to have to confirm it.

The Mazdaspeed 3's brakes get turned up with a new tandem-bore booster to increase booster volume and, hence, braking force while keeping the package narrow. In the front, where it matters, rides a pair of calipers off the Volvo S40 that grip 12.6-inch vented discs. ABS, traction control, and stability control are standard.

Brakes are one part of this car that shouldn't be skimped on, get yourself some good brakes, not that autozone cheapy crap (no offence).

Here's some info I swiped from one of the 'other' forums. Must give credit to CosmicBlueMS3 for posting this:

OEM Fronts # B3YF-33-23Z $130.70 through mazdaspeed motorsports
OEM Rears # C2Y3-26-48ZA $51.40 through mazdaspeed motorsports

Autoexe Sports $250
Autoexe Streets $105

Hawk HPS front: # HB549F.702 $80 rear: # HB478F.605 $64
Hawk HP PLUS front: # HB549N.702 $116 rear: # HB478N.605 $75 (price has most likely dropped since this post)

Hawk Blue 9012 front: n/a rear: # HB478E.605 ~$105/set
Hawk HT10 front: n/a rear: # HB478S.605 ~$145/set

I use the Hawk HPS and love them. This info could be here somewhere already but I'm not sure.

Performance Racing 04-28-2008 07:27 AM

The Mazda3 and Speed3 pads are the same application... lol

Shouldn't be too hard to find em. I have Hawk pads in stock now.
To previous poster:

New Hawk HPS Front pad part no. HB519F.682

Full set, 2 sets in stock: $137.00 Shipped.
Beats the hell out of the OEM/Autozone/Advanced Auto pads.

gsrtype1 04-28-2008 10:49 AM

UPDATE! the reg 3 pads at the dealer are $93 what the guy quoted.. I had to explain the reg3 and speed are diff he found the correct part number under "mazdaspeed3"$217.00!!! SUCKS!!! But i know the dude he said hwe would give me a discount to $175..

$137 is better than $217 make sure you have the speed3 pads and not the reg3 pads and you got a deal bro!

gsrtype1 04-28-2008 04:35 PM

protege garage has front pads for $100, i wonder if these will work? even with th dealer giving me the "shop discount" still $175 for stockies is steep.

Crossbow 04-29-2008 05:55 AM

If anyone is looking for carbotech pad's, they're also available. (I didn't like the hawks as much as the carbotechs on my 6). Remember that bobcat's are the street application, the XP variants are track pads. Don't run track pads on the street! Unless you like noise, and live in a hot climate :).

gsrtype1 04-29-2008 09:29 AM

the $217.00 pads just go to the dealer, i can't get ahold of anyone so i guess i'll get those. i know the dude in the parts dept he said he will give them to me for $175.00..shop discount

gsrtype1 04-29-2008 11:58 AM

bought the dealer pads $190 including tax and my "shop discount"

how uch are the carbotech pads and are they listed for the speed3 or do we have to look for the s40 pads

Crossbow 04-29-2008 02:03 PM

looks like 136 for the fronts, 110 or the so for the rears. Listed for the speed3. Vendor isn't on the forum, so can't link to them I think.

:reporter:BEWARE!!! many vendors are listing speed3 pads that are not speed3 pads they are for the reg 3 and they mistakenly think they will fit.. Just installed facotry $200 pads guys!! took pics i'll do a how-to write up later as i have smash the tip of the cord that connects my camera to the computer.

Toss that cord....get a CARD READER. :Eyecrazy:

sweetpickles 04-29-2008 11:39 PM

RPM carries the carbotechs for the MS3 (apparently). $139 for the fronts and $112 for the rears.

MazdaMan13 04-30-2008 01:14 AM

i think i'll probably wait to get some slotted rotors for these

good idea but i have an old dell doesn't have a card reader...

Crossbow 04-30-2008 11:39 AM

If the car doesn't have directionally vaned rotors, the best rotor upgrade you could go for would be a DBA rotor, or any rotor which features directional vanes.

gsrtype1 04-30-2008 01:40 PM

just got a attatcher for the camera, making the how to thread..

gofast 06-30-2008 08:45 PM

just so you all know, the autozone part number on these is --1044 the first two dashes are letters depending what grade of durajunk that you get. but if the numbers are 1044 they are wrong.

speed3 10-09-2008 07:37 PM

our brakes are different than a regular 3. volvo s40 does not have the same calipers as ms3. Fuck car and driver for their misguided info. Our calipers are the same as xc90. see the other thread with pics.

GSR where is the write up man. My dealer want
$249+tax. Even a e46 m3 pads don't cost that much.

Oxmoor Mazda in Louisville, KY wanted $270 for front pads. My 1995 Three Series with 113K miles is proving to be much cheaper to run than my MS3.

MZRDISI4 10-09-2008 10:28 PM

Talk about price gouging on the pads for the MS3.

If you do get it done at the dealer you get lifetime pad replacement.

BACKYARDKUSTOMZ 01-25-2009 05:41 PM

I work at a NAPA store now ill have to look into this.

Yeah its the same unless they fixed the problem, the guy at napa was going to try to match me up with some volvo pads but he would have to order them and I didn't have time to wait.. I like Napa though they have some great prices if people just take a look.. I remeber when I had my integra and lexus I would go to autozone and oreily and theyd be like can't get that part man you have to go to the dealer then I would try Napa and they had the part in stock for cheap that has happend like 3-4 times one example the ac fan went out on my old lexus..

why buy new brakes right on mazda USA it says :

Our brakes stop, our warranty doesn’t. All Genuine Mazda and Value Products by Mazda Brake Pads and Shoes Come with a Lifetime Limited Warranty.

* All Mazda Genuine Parts or Value Products by Mazda Brake Pads and Shoes are under warranty, as long as the original purchaser of the replacement brake pads or shoes owns the vehicle on which they were originally installed.

Wonder if this means you gotta buy a set first then they warranty them ?

That's it, you need to buy them again keep the receipt. I mentioned this a few times but no one seems to care.. the stock pads are excellent even though they cost $200+, if you buy them you can get free replacements. I think though, you might have to have them installed at the dealer. I should check that out.. Then again it's only a hour of labor per axle.

ccann26 03-27-2009 07:17 PM

i also just read on mazda usa there is a front brake pads special 99.99 to replace front pads and refill/check brake fluids . end on the 31st though . I think im just going to get the dealer to replace them . The stock pads are pretty awesome IMO .

sorry about reposting what you just said .

LiamT 03-29-2009 11:29 PM

Yeah, I called a couple of Mazda/speed dealerships a few months ago and they all confirm that for the brake pad warranty/replacement to apply you do have to have the dealership install it.

MZRDISI4 03-29-2009 11:38 PM

Well in that case these MS3 pads can pay for themselves if you don't have the means to do the replacements yourself. If you do, go aftermarket. It should only be one hour of labor per axle. But after a certain amount of time the cost diff. is minimal.

BlackMS3 03-29-2009 11:53 PM

I have went to every parts store in the Northwest and every single OEM replacement manufacturer has the wrong part listed for the MS3....

I'm damn near metal on metal and I can't find pads anywhere.... my only option is to wait two weeks to order a set offline.... UGG!!!

Just go and buy a set of Volvo brake pads if your at metal to metal. They are about 80 to 100 bucks. I listed the part number and a limited review of it on this thread http://www.mazdaspeedforum.org/forum/foru...-brakes-2.html

I am hesistant to recommend the EBC Red Stuff brake pads to you as I only had it installed a few days ago. They have great stopping power but I don't know if will dust or grind rotors.

If you are near Sacramento, CA. I have the Volvo and Posi Quiets pads you can try until you get your own.
